“Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world between them, there is no third.”—T.S. Eliot
Join us on a journey through Dante’s Inferno, a poem that has enthralled readers and influenced writers for nearly 800 years. We will work our way through the poem at a steady pace (five-six cantos each week), with spirited discussions and lecturing only when necessary. The discussions will focus on the historical background and the philosophical issues raised by the poem (for example, what is “hell”?) as well as Dante’s rich and inventive poetry. With its mixture of love, lust, deceit, and deception—to say nothing of great poetry—there’s sure to be something for everyone.
Course Fee: $90; Member Fee: $81.
