FA18-37 SONGWRITING AND MUSIC PUBLISHING
Wednesdays: 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m.
8 Sessions: Sept. 26-Nov. 14
TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM
Tony Moon

The goal of this class is to take you behind the scenes of the music industry, to find out how songs are actually written, “pitched,” and protected. Along the way, we’ll explore the history of songwriting from the ‘30s on and all the changes brought by the arrival of each new musical genre. We’ll talk about the lives of famous songwriters like Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Hank Williams, and Carole King; how they got into the business; and the paths they took to success. We’ll look at the writer-publisher relationship and how artists select the songs they record. We’ll touch on copyright law and how songwriters are paid (and how much). We’ll also examine the ups and downs of the profession and its pitfalls.
Silver Member: $95; Gold Member: $85.50.
