SP19-15 EZRA POUND AND T.S. ELIOT: THE MAKERS OF MODERN POETRY

Tuesdays: 11 am-12:20 pm
8 Sessions: Mar. 12-Apr. 30
TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM
Stuart McDougal

Early in the 20th century, a pair of brash, young Americans challenged the language and forms of 19th century British and American poetry, and, in the process, created a revolution that forever altered the landscape of world literature. Who were these poets and what was the nature of this revolution? We will try to answer these questions (and, no doubt, quite a few others) by examining a handful of important poems by each, including examples of Pound and Eliot’s early works as well as several of Pound’s “Cantos” and Eliot’s “The Waste Land.” For this class, you will need “New Selected Poems and Translations” by Ezra Pound, (New Directions paperback, 2nd Edition) and “The Waste Land and Other Poems” including “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T. S. Eliot, ed. Helen Vendler (Signet Classic).
Silver Member: $95; Gold Member: $85.50.
