SP19-42 AMERICAN SLAVERY

Thursdays: 9-10:20 am
8 Sessions: Mar. 14-May 2
TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM
Alfred Jones

Chattel slavery was America’s original sin. For almost 250 years, men and women of European ancestry residing in North America held Africans and their descendants in cruel bondage. For generations after Emancipation, Americans (black and white) avoided coming to grips with the so-called Peculiar Institution. Finally, after World War II, historians began a wideranging investigation of slavery that continues to this day. This research has enriched our understanding of slavery beyond almost anyone’s expectations and deserves to be better known and appreciated. Employing Peter Kolchin’s “American Slavery: 1619-1877,” this course will undertake that task.
Silver Member: $95; Gold Member: $85.50.
