SU18-10 NARRATION AND AESTHETICS IN JAPANESE ART CINEMA

This course will examine Japan’s remarkable contributions to World Cinema with a survey of films from the 1950s to present day. Among the directors whose works we will view are Mizoguchi, Ozu, Kurosawa, Koreeda, and Kawase. We will place Japan’s cinema within the context of East Asian Cinema highlighting in class scene selections of the vibrant Taiwanese New Wave, (Ang Lee, Hsaio-hsien Hou, and Edward Yang) as well as New Wave directors from South Korea. Students will be asked to view each weekly film in advance to facilitate classroom discussion in a roundtable format. Course Fee: $95;
Member Fee: $85.50.
